This is where a mix is polished, balanced, and optimized to ensure it translates correctly across all listening environments – from car stereos and mobile speakers to large club systems and professional headphones. At this stage, the music is given its final character and adjusted to meet the technical standards required for today’s various distribution channels.

1. Technical Specifications for the Main File
The main file (your final mix) is the raw material on which the entire mastering rests. The quality of this file sets the ceiling for the final result.

File Format: Always export in an uncompressed format, preferably WAV. Avoid MP3 or other compressed formats, as they have undergone destructive data reduction that cannot be restored.

Sample Rate: Keep the sample rate your project was created in (e.g., 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz). Upsampling during export does not add quality and may introduce artifacts. If you haven’t started recording yet, we recommend setting the project to 48 kHz.

Bit Depth: Use 24-bit or 32-bit float when exporting your mix. This ensures dynamic resolution is preserved and there is enough digital headroom for processing without affecting the noise floor.
2. Headroom – Give Your Mix Space to Breathe
One of the most important preparations is leaving space, known as headroom. If your mix is already heavily processed to reach high volume, your options to shape the sound and control dynamics during mastering are limited.
Handling the Master Bus
Before exporting, disable all limiters, clippers, and other “loudness plugins” on your master bus. The goal is to deliver a mix where transients and dynamics remain intact. If you’ve applied specific bus compression or EQ as part of your track’s sound, you can leave these in place – but when in doubt, it’s safer to send a cleaner version.
Aim for Proper Levels
A good rule of thumb is to let the mix’s highest peaks land around –6 dBFS. Most importantly, the file should never clip (go above 0 dB). Digital distortion from clipping is very hard – and often impossible – to fix in mastering; it will become more prominent when the track is eventually boosted in volume.
To maintain full control over your levels, we recommend using a dedicated loudness meter, such as the free Youlean Loudness Meter. Having a visual tool is crucial because our ears easily get used to high volume; the meter helps objectively confirm that you have the headroom required for the next step.
3. Mastering in Dolby Atmos (ADM)
As a studio certified by both Dolby and Apple, KMR Studios sees that more and more projects today require a spatial master. Mastering for Dolby Atmos follows different technical rules than traditional stereo.
When submitting an ADM BWF file for mastering, object-level control is crucial. No individual object or “bed” in your export should exceed –1 dB. This margin avoids technical issues when summing audio objects in the final stage and ensures the mastering engineer can meet today’s spatial music specifications.

4. Reference Material and Vision
Music – and sound in general – is subjective. Communication is therefore a critical part of the process. To help us understand your vision, include the following:

Listening Mix: Include the version you’ve been referencing during the work (even if limited). This helps us understand the balance your ears are used to and the power you expect from the final result.

Reference Tracks: Choose 1–3 songs in a similar genre that you think sound fantastic. This isn’t about copying them but establishing a common reference frame. Include a short note about what you like in each reference, e.g., “I like how clear the vocals are here” or “I aim for the same bass weight as in this track”.
5. Final Mix Check
Before delivering your files, consider these details that often get overlooked but make a significant difference:

Sibilance: Check harsh “S” and “T” sounds in vocals. In mastering, high frequencies are often boosted, which can exaggerate sibilance. Use a de-esser in your mix if needed.

Start and End: Ensure the file starts cleanly and leaves enough space for reverb and delay tails to decay naturally.

Mono Compatibility: Verify the mix still sounds balanced in mono. This ensures your track works on everything from club systems to mobile speakers.
6. Delivery to KMR Studios
