Dolby Atmos Lecture at the Music Institute in Jönköping

On November 5, 2025, we visited the Music Institute in Jönköping to meet a class of aspiring audio and music producers enrolled in their higher vocational education program. Over the course of three hours, we covered the fundamentals of Dolby Atmos and explored how modern music production workflows function in practice, with a particular focus on working in Logic Pro. The day was characterized by demonstrations, dialogue, and many questions about how the technology is used in real-world productions. Introduction to Dolby Atmos in a Production Environment

The day in Jönköping began with a shared presentation where Filip Killander from KMR explained how Dolby Atmos can be understood as a natural evolution of modern music production. The focus was not on theory for its own sake, but on how the technology is actually used in practice within a DAW-based workflow, particularly in Logic Pro.

The students followed along as Filip worked through concrete examples from his own productions, demonstrating how a traditional stereo mindset can be translated into a more immersive approach. Much of the discussion focused on how audio objects, positioning, and routing affect the overall result in an Atmos mix, and how creative decisions evolve when working in three dimensions.

Several participants already had a solid technical foundation, allowing the conversation to move quickly beyond the basics and into more nuanced discussions about workflows and creative choices.

Open Dialogue and Practical Demonstrations in Logic Pro

During the middle section of the lecture, Filip Killander presented practical examples directly in Logic Pro, building a Dolby Atmos project step by step. The focus was on clearly demonstrating how the different parts of a project work together and how to approach sound design in an immersive audio format.

The students remained actively engaged throughout the session and continuously asked questions, allowing the presentation to develop in real time based on their interests. Filip broke down several concepts to demonstrate that much of the work in Dolby Atmos is built upon familiar principles, but with additional dimensions to consider.

Discussions also emerged around practical aspects such as exporting, compatibility, and how to prevent technology from becoming an obstacle rather than a creative tool. These types of questions are often central to meetings like this, as they reflect the reality the students will soon encounter in professional environments.

Why We Conduct Educational Initiatives Like This

For KMR, lectures like this are about creating a direct connection between education and the music industry. The Music Institute in Jönköping has a clear professional focus, and it is evident that the students are approaching the transition into working life.

In these settings, Filip Killander and KMR have the opportunity to share valuable experience while also gaining insight into how the next generation of producers approaches technology and creative work. This makes the conversations mutually beneficial rather than one-sided lectures.

The goal of this particular day was to create a balanced perspective between curiosity, technical understanding, and practical application, allowing Dolby Atmos to be discussed as a genuine production tool rather than an abstract concept.
