Johan Sundelöf now with ‘Peace in the Present’
Musician and pianist Johan Sundelöf releases his first recorded album ‘Peace in the Present’! An album with 18 beautiful and relaxing piano pieces, each with its own melodic signature and story, created with the artist’s sense of music.
The Personal Significance of the Songs
Johan talks about how the process with the album started and how it has its background in something that has been difficult for him, “I have sung quite a bit in my life but in connection with losing one of our children, I fell silent, it didn’t feel possible to sing and that feeling lasted quite a long time. However, melodies started coming on the piano and over time there were more and more melodies.”
This was in 2014 and since then, Johan has simply been collecting melodies that have come to him, which over the years have also grown into a substantial collection. When he played the music, he also noticed that others were captivated by the melodies and enjoyed listening to them, which made him decide to publicly share the works.
It becomes at the same time a way to finish the project and move on: “Now I felt it was time to collect the melodies and also in some way put an end to this chapter and let the journey continue with new music.” In other words, he looks forward to starting to create new melodies and find new emotions in the music, but before that, there is an excitement in him to see what impressions these melodies will have on the listeners.
Regarding the style and feeling of the music, Johan thinks “this is music that is nice to listen to if you want to relax, for example when you come home from a stressful day and just want to take a deep breath, calm down, relax and land. Genre-wise it is a mix of jazz and folk tones perhaps, melodic with a touch of melancholy.”
The Creation Process with Peace in the Present
Johan finds that completing the recording of the album has been both very fun and exciting, as it concludes, and in a way, realizes the craft that he has devoted himself to for a long time. He also means that it is not possible for him to start another similar project before he has this completely clear, which he now fortunately has. An upcoming vision is to expand the music with more musicians who can add instruments, complementing the piano loops to get a new touch and end up in a developed musical context.
That his works are now recorded is something that primarily also facilitates and paves the way for this type of collaboration. When it comes to the recording of the album, he tells how he appreciated the process of immortalizing his songs: “To sit at home at the grand piano with KMR and rig for recording at home and just devote oneself to recording this music was so much fun. It was this feeling that I wanted nowhere, I just wanted to be there and then and do just that, to record and be in the music.”
When it comes to whether there is a favorite among the songs, he means that all have their mood and their story. ‘Peace in the present’ is otherwise a little extra liked as it was the first to come and in many ways characterizes the type of music he writes. Even ‘Inner Peace’ stands out because it captures the feeling of the album so well, just being able to lean back and relax. “Then I look forward to the continued journey with the songs, and regardless of the extent to which they reach the listeners, these melodies continue to be significant, but if they can please others, that is of course fun!”
